Most Reverend Antonio Isauro A. Buenafe
Bishop Antonio Isauro Buenafe is the first Roman Catholic Bishop who is a native of Abra. He was born on October 12, 1938 in Tayum. He took his elementary education at the Holy Ghost School in Tayum then transferred to a public school in Pamplona, Cagayan. His parents were reluctant to send him to the seminary for he was the only son. With the help of a Holy Spirit Nun, the young Antonio found his way to the seminary. He first stayed at the Christ the King Seminary in Quezon City then moved to the Immaculate Conception Seminary in Vigan. There, he finished his minor and major seminary formations.
Bishop Buenafe was ordained to the priesthood on March 30, 1963 by Bishop Odilo Etspueler of Bangued. Fr. Buenafe is the first Diocesan Priest of the Prelature Nullius of Bangued (now a diocese). Since ordination to the priesthood, he served as formator at the St. Joseph Minor Seminary. In June 1967, he was appointed in charge of the Parish of PeƱarubia. In 1970, he returned to the minor seminary and became the rector until 1976, the year of his election to the Episcopacy. His ordination to the Episcopate was held on March 30, 1976. He became the Titular Bishop of Meta and Auxillary Bishop of Nueva Segovia having the Episcopal motto: In Cruce Christi Gloriemur (We Glory only in the Cross of Christ). While on his way to Manila on the fateful day of May 5, 1976, an astray bullet cut short the life of the new bishop. Bishop Antonio Buenafe was bishop for only 37 days and never had the chance to work in his assignment as Auxillary Bishop of Nueva Segovia.
