Seminary Days



Most Reverend Antonio Isauro A. Buenafe
Bishop Antonio Isauro Buenafe is the first Roman Catholic Bishop who is a native of Abra. He was born on October 12, 1938 in Tayum. He took his elementary education at the Holy Ghost School in Tayum then transferred to a public school in Pamplona, Cagayan. His parents were reluctant to send him to the seminary for he was the only son. With the help of a Holy Spirit Nun, the young Antonio found his way to the seminary. He first stayed at the Christ the King Seminary in Quezon City then moved to the Immaculate Conception Seminary in Vigan. There, he finished his minor and major seminary formations.
Bishop Buenafe was ordained to the priesthood on March 30, 1963 by Bishop Odilo Etspueler of Bangued. Fr. Buenafe is the first Diocesan Priest of the Prelature Nullius of Bangued (now a diocese). Since ordination to the priesthood, he served as formator at the St. Joseph Minor Seminary. In June 1967, he was appointed in charge of the Parish of Peñarubia. In 1970, he returned to the minor seminary and became the rector until 1976, the year of his election to the Episcopacy. His ordination to the Episcopate was held on March 30, 1976. He became the Titular Bishop of Meta and Auxillary Bishop of Nueva Segovia having the Episcopal motto: In Cruce Christi Gloriemur (We Glory only in the Cross of Christ). While on his way to Manila on the fateful day of May 5, 1976, an astray bullet cut short the life of the new bishop. Bishop Antonio Buenafe was bishop for only 37 days and never had the chance to work in his assignment as Auxillary Bishop of Nueva Segovia.

Most Reverend Victorino Ligot, D.D.
His Excellency, Most Rev. Victorino Cristobal Ligot is a native of Laoag, Ilocos Norte. He was born on March 21, 1924. He started his seminary formation at the old Seminario de la Immaculada Conception in Vigan. Sem. Victorino belonged to the pioneer seminarians to reside in the new Major Seminary building in Pantay Daya. On December 20,1952, he was ordained as deacon by Bishop Juan Sison The same prelate ordained him to the priesthood on March 21, 1953 at St. Paul Metropolitan Cathedral. When the Civil Province of Ilocos Norte became Diocese of Laoag in 1961, Fr. Ligot became one of its pioneer priests. He served as Parish Priest in various parishes of the Diocese. He was elected to the Episcopacy when he was Parish Priest of Laoag Cathedral and Vicar General of the Diocese. On February 12, 1969, he was named Titular Bishop of Badua and Auxillary Bishop of Nueva Segovia taking Pax in Caritate (Peace in Charity) as his Episcopal motto. After a short stint in Nueva Segovia, he was made first bishop of the Diocese of San Fernando de La Union in 1970. He is remembered in San Fernando as the builder of the diocese. There, he served for ten years. Bishop Ligot died on September 18, 1980 at the age of 56.

Most Reverend Emiliano Madangeng, D.D.
He is remembered as the first Filipino Vicar of the Montañosa. He was born on March 5,1927 in Hapao, Mountain Province. He, together with seminarians Francisco Claver and Sebastian Dalis, who also became bishops were among the pioneer seminarians of the Vicariate of Montañosa. He entered the Seminario de la Immaculada Conception in Vigan to start his priestly formation. A conscientious and studious seminarian, he had a deep appreciation for manual work. He was among the first resident seminarians of the Immaculate Conception Major Seminary in Pantay Daya. In December 15, 1953, Rev. Madangeng was ordained to the priesthood. He served with zeal at the Vicariate of Montañosa. Among his tasks were his works as Vicariate Secretary and Treasurer. Due to the need for a co-worker to the ailing Bishop William Brasseur, Fr. Madangeng was elected and subsequently ordained bishop on July 21, 1971. He became the Titular Bishop of Trofimiana and Auxillary Bishop of the Montañosa until 1981, when he took possession as the Apostolic Vicar of the said Vicariate. His Episcopal motto was, Afferent Montes Pacem (Let the Mountains Bring Peace).
On December 18, 1987, Bishop Madangeng resigned as Vicar Apostolic of the Montañosa due to a serious illness. He spent his remaining years in Bontoc, Mountain Province. Bishop Madangeng died in 1997.

Most Reverend Sebastian A. Dalis, D.D.
Bishop Sebastian Acol Dalis is the third native bishop of Montañosa and second from the Diocesan Clergy. He was born on March 25, 1925 in Sablan, Province of Benguet. He began his seminary formation at the Seminario de la Immaculada Conception in Vigan, Ilocos Sur. He finished his theological schooling at the Immaculate Conception Major Seminary in Barangay Pantay Daya in the year 1953. His class is among the smallest number of graduates in the history of the seminary only having five. But their class is very notable to have produced three bishops.
Bishop Dalis was ordained to the priesthood on December 15, 1953 at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Cathedral in Baguio City. He served as an active priest and collaborator of the late Bishop William Brasseur. He also worked under the Episcopacy of his former classmate, Bishop Madangeng. In 1987, the Holy See named him Titular Bishop of Thabraca and Auxillary Bishop of Montañosa. He was ordained as bishop on February 25, 1988. Together with Bishop Salgado, he worked in tending the flock in the said vicariate. While Auxillary Bishop, he also labored on the formation of young seminarians as rector of the San Pablo Major Seminary in 1989 to 1991. After his term in San Pablo Seminary, he was appointed rector of the Cathedral of Baguio. On July 2, 1992, the Vicariate of Montañosa was divided into three vicariates, one among the divisions is the Vicariate of Baguio. Bishop Dalis was named Auxillary Bishop of Baguio and served as such until his retirement on March 25, 2000.


Most Rev. Ernesto Antolin Salgado D.D.

Archbishop Ernesto Antolin Salgado is a native of Sta. Lucia, Ilocos Sur. Born on November 22, 1936, he spent his college years at the Immaculate Conception Major Seminary and graduated in 1958. Thereafter, he transferred at the Pontifical University of Sto. Tomas Central Seminary in Manila where he obtained his Licentiate in Philosophy and completed his theological studies with a Licentiate in Sacred Theology. He was ordained Deacon on September 24, 1961 at the Vigan Cathedral.

His first assignment was at the Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary, where he was a Junior Prefect. Later, he became the Rector of the said seminary until 1972. In 1973 to 1974, Fr. Salgado joined the Team Ministry of the Vigan Cathedral. He subsequently embarked to Rome for his further studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University where he obtained his Doctorate in Sacred Theology. Fr. Salgado came back to the Philippines and was assigned as formator of the Immaculate Conception Major Seminary in 1978. He served as a Vice Rector, Prefect of Discipline, and Professor of Moral Theology. Fr. Salgado was also in charge of the Spiritual Formation Year Program from 1981 to 1986.

On October 17, 1986, the Holy See elected him as a Titular Bishop of Buruni and Coadjutor Bishop of the Montañosa by succession on December 18, 1988. He was appointed as the First Vicar Apostolic of the newly erected Apostolic Vicariate of Baguio on July 6, 1992. The Holy See moved him to the Diocese of Laoag on December 7, 2000 and was installed on January 30, 2001. On February 12, 2005, Bishop Salgado was appointed sixth Archbishop of Nueva Segovia. He was installed on May 30, 2005. Up to the present, he serves as the Chief Shepherd of Nueva Segovia with his motto, Pro Populo Consecratus (Consecrated for the People).
